The Assembly Rooms, Newcastle

Set in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne city centre, The Assembly Rooms is one of the city's finest and grandest Georgian buildings dating back to 1776.
This historic building is of international importance and has been sympathetically restored to match it's former glory and is to this day, according to the inscription on it's foundation stone laid in 1774: "Rooms dedicated to the most elegant recreation"
Designed by William Newton, the building was completed and the opening celebrated with an assembly in Newcastle's famous Race Week, on Midsummer's night in 1776. Now into it's fourth century The Assembly Rooms have in the past hosted concerts by Avison's sons, Johann Strauss, Liszt, Poulenc and Benjamin Britten, to name but a few.

Chillingham Castle

The remarkable Chillingham Castle has, since the twelve-hundreds, been continuously
owned by the family of the Earls Grey and their relations. The large Great Hall with its stone flagged floor, tapestries, armour, weapons and heads of deer and wild cattle has an ancient mediaeval atmosphere. It also houses many valuable paintings of historic kings, such as Charles I and James II, and historic figures such as Judge Jeffries and Lord Bacon.

The Georgian Dining Room at Hatfield College

During the eighteenth century, this part of Hatfield College was a coaching inn
known as the Red Lion, and was for many years the centre of concert and social
life in Durham. Known as Richardson's Long-Room and later Hoult's Assembly Room, the room remains substantially unchanged, retaining many of its original
features. It is the perfect authentic location for the Ensembles first concert
in Durham City.

St James's United Reformed Church
With connections to Dissenting congregations of 1684 and earlier, St James's is the oldest Free Church in Newcastle. The current building on a new site opened in 1884. Now listed Grade 2*, it is an uncommon example of a central Free Church. The central ceiling, chandelier, stained glass, wrought iron screen and notable pipeless organ by Copeman Hart (1973) are important features.

The Guildhall, Berwick upon Tweed

Berwick-upon-Tweed is the only town in England to be completely encircled by Elizabethan Walls - a legacy of over three centuries of Anglo-Scottish warfare. During that time the town changed hands many times. Today it is an important market town and crossing point for the river Tweed. Views of the town are dominated by the Town Hall, completed in 1761. The Guildhall was built in the 1750s in a Classical style, and formerly housed the town prison on its top floor.
